We Made a Comic Book!

So my buddy, Jason Muhr, and I created a comic book series called CRETACEOUS and it’s making it’s debut as an Ashcan at C2E2 in Chicago this weekend. We are very excited to pitch it to publishers.

The first issue kicks off our story about a young NYC chef named Nate Willner who is left unmotivated and hollow after his restaurant explodes, killing his sister. Forced to move back to his tiny hometown of Blackfossil, Utah and live with his grandmother (who suddenly has a fondness for knives) he tries to carve out some semblance of life working at a coffee shop. But just when Nate thinks he’ll be forever stuck making breakfast sandwiches for old people, he unexpectedly inherits a mysterious house built into the side of a mountain and a dive suit that can take him to the age of the dinosaurs. Stranded in the Cretaceous, waiting for the suit to re-power and take him home, Nate accidentally reignites his passion for cooking by eating a dinosaur. And then he gets a really crazy idea…

The idea for Cretaceous first came to me when someone posed that age-old geek question, “If you could have any superpower, what would it be?” My answer was, and always will be, that I’d want complete mastery over time and space. But if I could travel to any place at any time what would I actually want first? Surprisingly, the first thing that popped into my head was that I’d absolutely love to make a dinosaur sandwich.

Now here we are, years after I pictured the perfect lunch. I had no idea that craving would turn into a comic book, but I can’t tell you how excited I am to be writing the series and co-creating it with Jason.

The plan is to pitch this series to publishers. If we don’t find an official home for it we will get the first issue colored and make it available on the web as a digital comic. But before all that happens, the 48-page, black-and-white ashcan edition of the 1st issue will be available in print at C2E2 this coming weekend at Outfit Comics Booth #1629. There are only 100 copies and they are all hand-numbered. You can check out a 5-page preview of the book and the wraparound cover at Jason’s Website. Jason will also be selling some amazing prints of Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099 and Game of Thrones. Please stop by and check out the book. You can also get updates and more information on the series by following us on Twitter @CretaceousComic.
